Miranda Tapsell was born in Darwin. She is of Aboriginal descent and her people are the Larrakia. Miranda grew up in Kakadu National Park where she attended primary school. She began performing at the age of seven when she joined a tap dancing group.  At thirteen, her parents enrolled her into the Summer Short Courses at NIDA when they visited her relatives in Sydney. Miranda continued to attend Summer Short Courses when she visited Sydney. At fourteen she moved back to Darwin to continue her education at Darwin High School, where she did drama as a major subject. She joined and performed with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts, a local youth drama group. At sixteen, she auditioned and won the Bell Shakespeare Regional Performance Scholarship with the Bell Shakespeare ensemble in 2004.
