Greg Larsen

Greg Larsen

Greg Larsen is a brilliant comic/multi-hyphenate/self-described Useful Idiot who began his career writing YouTube sketches and performing stand-up comedy in Brisbane in 2008.

After touring around the country performing live and amassing millions of views online, Greg moved to Melbourne, where he co-created and directed the live smash Fancy Boy Variety Show. Critically acclaimed and a complete sell-out at the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Fancy Boy won the Golden Gibbo Award for best independent comedy and became a cult TV show on ABC and now Apple TV in Australia.

Greg went on to appear as an actor in numerous projects such as Dirty Laundry Live, How Not to Behave, and The Let Down. He has written and performed on the acclaimed ABC breakfast TV satire Get Krack!n and co-wrote two episodes of Ronny Chieng: International Student, a Comedy Central/ABC co-production which also aired on the BBC. Greg was one of the four reporters on the ABC’s Tonightly with Tom Ballard – in his role as a daily reporter Greg wrote, performed, directed, and oversaw the edit of daily video packages. Greg has also contributed his writing talents to Channel Ten’s The Project and wrote and performed in the ABC’s Covid-19-inspired comedy At Home Alone Together. In 2023 Greg featured as part of the core cast of the new sketch comedy series We Interrupt This Broadcast. He can also be seen in Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock and in The Tourist opposite Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald.

Greg co-created True Australian Patriots alongside Anne Edmonds and Damien Power in 2016, setting a crazily high bar for surrealist satire on Australian stages and winning the Director’s Choice Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His subsequent solo shows Useful Idiot, This Might Not Be Hell and We All Have Bloody Thoughts combine poignant insights about the human condition, searing socio-political indictments, references to Greg’s punk past and a preoccupation with food court dining. This Might Not Be Hell scored Greg the coveted comedians’ choice Piece of Wood Award at the 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and We All Have Bloody Thoughts was nominated for Most Outstanding Show at the 2022 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His 2023 show Slurp’s Up was not nominated for any awards but remains the most quotable show title of that year.

Greg’s 2024 hour Revolting – “a twisted clarion call to seize the day” – garnered critical acclaim and packed houses in Melbourne this year, ahead of a world tour that includes Edinburgh, London and Brisbane.

Although Larsen’s relentless outburst is driven by a primal outrage that’s hilarious, it also comes with a smart, opinionated commentary. The stand-up’s torment is to have all the intelligence to see what’s wrong but none of the power to change it.” ★★★★ Chortle, 2022

“A new show that pushes him to the upper echelon of this country’s performers.” ★★★★ ½ The Age, 2021

“There are not many comics more adept at combining juvenile humour and righteous political fury to brilliant effect than Greg Larsen.” Chortle, 2021
